I also remember how every day is like a New Year because it is like starting all over again. New day, new year, new opportunities! Today I look back not just at this year, but I look back at my last couple of years. Back in 2009 I started my photography journey, not as a business right away as I had no idea what the buttons on my camera were when I first got it 2009. It's been an amazing journey from when I first started taking pictures of just my kids, husband, friends and neighbors to meeting some amazing clients who became lifelong friends. I love what I do because I get to meet with such unique and just inspiring people. I am truly blessed. I have so much to look forward in 2012 with so many aspects of my life. I hope to be able to have the honor of capturing your memories this year. For today's giveaway, comment what amazing thing you look forward to for the year 2012 and why you think it would be wonderful to have a part of that amazing thing captured by yours truly: Nelly Hernandez. :)Again, winners are chosen by random.org, but I love reading all of your comments. Minot, ND Photographer: Nelly Hernandez Photography 12 Days of Christmas Giveaway

Ever since I can remember, I remember my mother taking us to church every Sunday for mass, Saturday for Church school, Wednesday for bible study. My mother kept us busy. I won't lie, there were times I wanted to sleep in and just tell my mom, "Mom, I am a child of God, I am sure he won't mind if I miss one day" LOL. My mother taught us the true meaning of Christmas, the celebration of our savior Jesus Christ. We were a poor but oh so very happy family. We were a family of 10, (6 girls and 2 boys, and my parents) all living in a 2 bedroom house. I have such wonderful memories of those days. I thank my Mother today for the woman I am today. I thank her for showing me that Christmas Day wasn't about the gifts or the food (even though it was super delicious) but it was about Christ. I remember doing what we call a "POSADA". The posadas re-enact Mary and Joseph's cold and difficult journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of shelter. Children dress up as Mary, Joseph, shepards and angels. One main Angel leads the procession as we go from house to house in our neighborhood singing. So many fun posadas that every time I go home, we still do for the kids.

So today I ask, what wonderful Holiday childhood memories do you have ? I know we live in America where everyone is different and unique. For today's giveaway, I will be giving away a Free Sitting Fee for any type of session. You would only need to pay for your order. :) Remember, winners are chosen using random.org, but it is still nice to read through everyone's comments. :)

Minot, ND Photographer: Nelly Hernandez Photography 12 Days of Christmas Day Three

We all go through many hardships. Some we can make some sort of change to make them better and others are just totally out of our control. This year while I went home to Texas for the summer, Minot, ND and surrounding areas went through some devastating hardships-enduring a flood. Many people lost their homes and everything they have ever worked for. Driving back into town had me heartbroken. Looking at so many destroyed homes, closed restaurants, zoo, and so on. Now the flood is finally done and over with but what is left is the aftermath many of these peoples are left to deal with. However, to see how strong some of these people are, it's just amazing!

Today, the prize for the giveaway is ONLY for FLOOD victims. If you were affected in any way by it, either relocating to a completely new home or are now renovating and rebuilding your prior home. Please comment below telling us how the flood affected you, but yet what you are thankful for. :) For this particular day, I will NOT have the online random service choose the winner. I will have a guest judge from out of the state of North Dakota choose a winner. The prize for today will be a Free Family/Boudoir/Glamour Shoot, with 10 edited images on a disc with copyright release. You will also receive 10% off any additional products should you wish to order. For all other entries that do not win, if you wish to book with me, there will be 15% off your total print order. Happy Holidays everyone and remember... You are Blessed!!!!

12 Days of Christmas with Minot, ND Photographer: Nelly Hernandez Photography Day 2

Congrats to yesterday's winner: LEAH!!!! You are the winner of a free 11x14 lustre print.

There has been a a criticism of Christmas celebrations are becoming highly materialistic in nature and the true meaning of Christmas is lost. There is only exchange of gift rather the warmth of compassion, sending of cards perfunctorily rather than out of love, hosting Christmas parties instead of reaching out the hands of help to the unprivileged ones. I've heard and read of a few stories that speak of angels. One of the story is about a mother of six who had been a state of misery and poverty and has to go through much difficulties to earn the livelihood. Christmas was just round the corner and the mother had almost no money to buy gifts for the children. She managed to arrange some old toys which she painted and decided to give the children as Christmas gifts. Miraculously on the night of Christmas Eve, while returning home from her work, she found her car loaded with Christmas presents, food and clothes for her family! Indeed, there are angels beside us who take care of us but we don't see them all the time.

For today's giveaway entry, please comment who do you consider your angel to be. :) Again, please leave your name and email, should you win. Today's (Dec. 14th) prize will be a free 11x14 collage on a disc with copyright release. :)Again, this is for past and future clients. <3

{Lovely and just all around Hot!} Minot, ND Nelly Hernandez Photography

Okay so you totally know the chemistry can get pretty heavy with two very attractive people that love each other, huh? Well this shoot was no exception. One very attractive couple and oh so loving. I had an amazing time working with these two, especially seeing the love they share for each other. I LOVE MY JOB!!!

{Super Model Ms A} Minot, North Dakota Nelly Hernandez Photography

So I don't know about all of you but I am hooked on AMerica's Next Top Model. I usually don't watch the current ones because I stay pretty busy, but I am always watching reruns and marathons. :D So many talented girls out there that I could totally see being there. This young lady was no exception. Obviously you can see very well that she is absolutely gorgeous and has a killer smile. Those eyes... just to die for. However she had that extra spark. She was such a sweet girl. I really had a great time working with her. :)

{Todd Family}

Talk about some amazingly beautiful people. WOW!!! I am just so lucky to get to capture memories for such beauty! THis couple not only was so easy to work with but they were lots of fun too. YOu could totally see the love in each other's eyes and the way they just enjoyed being at each other's side. Ladies and gentlemen... this is true love. :)

{Andino Family} Minot, North Dakota Nelly Hernandez Photography

How extremely beautiful is family??? EXTREMELY BEAUTIFUL. As a proud mother of 3 and a wife to an amazing family I really do value family. Time flies and our children grow right in front of our eyes, in a blink it seems. This shoot I had the pleasure of hanging out with one amazing family who is not super cute but also just super adorable in that the love shared is just.... BEAUTIFUL. Enjoy some of their shots.

Lovely!

Of course there are always days when I get these amazingly beautiful mother and son who have their Airman away on deployment. I see those a lot. However, to see some with amazing attitudes and huge smiles on their faces missing daddy, well, it is just such a refresher. Makes me appreciate them even more for their sacrifices. I had such a great time with these two and both were just so photogenic. Fell in love with them at first sight. Enjoy!!

A print costs less than $1, so why is photography so expensive?

Before I became a photographer, I would sometimes cringe at the end of my Sears, Walmart or Olan Mills session because the prices were sometimes so high. I would think no way, how come Walmart prints are about $1-$5 and yet these people charge outrageous prices!!! Now that I have become a photographer and have come to learn a lot of things do I finally understand lots of things. I realize how many clients are unaware of all of these things. I came across something from one amazing photographer, Kim Howells. She explains things so very well, much better than I ever would, LOL. Anywho, here is her post. You can also see more of Kim's work on her website www.kimhowellsphotography.co.nz

Kim Howells:A print costs less than $1, so why is photography so expensive?

This is something that I didn't understand until I became a professional photographer. It seemed that portrait prices were extravagant, and those who advertised a free sitting really stung you for the prints! So I thought I would outline a few reasons why professional photographs cost more than what you pay for your own prints in your local photo shop.

1. Photography is a business. Like any other business, there are bills to pay - advertising, fuel, accounting and admin, stationary, insurance (yikes, pricey, as it has to cover not only liability, but also gear that is used off-location), repairs and maintenance, second shooters, etc.

2. A family portrait shoot may only take 1-2 hours, and a wedding may only take 4 hours. But first, there is the preparation. The photographer will check out venues, research what the light is like at the time of day planned, have options for inclement weather, and have ideas on what poses will be used, and where. There is checking the gear - cleaning lenses, making sure batteries are charged, checking backup gear, etc. And all the paperwork including model release forms and contracts.

3. Processing and post-processing. Most professional photographers shoot in a file format called RAW. These have to be processed into JPG files - much the same as a film negative was processed in a dark room. Then there is post-processing - the fine-tuning of each image, or converting into black and white, or special effects - all of which can certainly be more than a 10 minute job per photo. A typical family portrait shoot at the moment takes me around 10 hours of work, from preparation to the finished high-res set of post-processed images. A wedding is more like 40 hours (yes, a whole "standard working week" worth!). So those hours need to be paid for.

4. The gear. Most professional photographers will have their camera, several lenses, and backup gear. Good quality lense start at around $1000, and professional series lenses start at around $2000. Then there is the camera body, which is significantly more than that. And then flashes, reflectors, grey cards, gear bags, maintenance equipment, tripods, rechargeable batteries, spare batteries, huge memory cards - several of them. Then the computer gear - a high speed, fast computer, good monitor, calibration software (several hundred dollars worth), and photo editing software (another few thousand). Then the props - backgrounds, stands, lighting, flooring, chairs, clothing etc. And for some photographers, the cost of a building that is either leased or owned.

5. The photographer's talent. You may think it's easy to pick up a camera, put it in auto, and take photos. But professional photographers spend many hours learning how to take photos - they learn composition, exposure, depth of field, white balance, endless post-processing techniques, and more. As a new photographer (I call myself an "emerging photographer"), I have spent around 20 hours a week for the last 9 months studying, practicing, learning, and getting my photos critiqued by experts. So that is around 720 hours. They say it takes 10,000 hours of practice for complex notions to become second nature. I have a long way to go yet. Plus there is the cost of education.

6. Other time spent with the client, ordering prints, designing storyboards, taking digital files into the lab to get processed, picking them up and checking them, meeting with the client again.

So......add it all up. The time for preparation, the shoot, processing, and meeting with the client. Covering disposable costs like fuel, phone, internet, insurance etc. Being compensated for artistic talent, and time spent learning.

And finally - look at some old family photos from when you were a child. They are fascinating, they evoke memories, they are a moment captured that you will never see again. You can't beat having a great family portrait to look back on. Once that stage of your family has gone, there is no getting it back. Being able to preserve it forever......priceless.

My Hero

I have came to know many people who I look up to and admire. People I can say I truly and honestly would be so honored to be one tenth of the way they are. This is so true when it comes to my mother. She is my true hero like no other. Raising eight children and teaching each and every one of them to be kind, generous, look beyond color, race, financial status and so on. She also taught me how to be a great mother by being one. She led by example.

To her, I say the following.

You have taught me many valuable lessons, but there are a few specific ones I recall. Now these may be lessons that you don’t even
realize you taught me, but you did. And I must say, I have never forgotten them and have made sure that my children learn them as well.

So many things I want to say, but for now, one small but yet important thing--- I love you !!!!

One Smart and Talented Top Model

As most of you know, I've had the pleasure of working with many models-both successful and aspiring. It's been such a great journey for me shooting these super talented beings. I love working with models because they bring so much energy to the shoot. It is such a positive energy of amazing self esteem and it is contagious!!

This shoot was no different. Ahhhh... this girl is just beautiful!!! Obviously you guys can see the physical part. However I am not just talking about the physical but even more so, the emotional and mental being of this girl. She has a good head on her shoulders and knows what she wants. I have already warned her she cannot forget me when she goes big!!! :D xoxoxo

Forever Pals

There are times when you come across some little boys who just share this amazing bond. Such was the case with these two boys. They were so much fun and oh so full of energy. I had so much fun in this shoot and got a good workout chasing after one of them as well. :)

Yes, I am back to blogging :)

So I took a long absence on my blog. Bad Nelly!!!! Ahhh, I love the internet and the many ways we can communicate with our loved ones, fans and clients. However, I must admit sometimes I get so lazy in updating every single one of my communicating outlets. Yes, it is a burden to me to have so many websites, blogs and such so I figured I will be including all of my pics here: maternity, family, boudoir, modeling, etc.

So just to get me back on the bandwagon, I am showing off some of my beautiful friend's maternity pics. :)

Pro Photographer's Manifesto

There are many times that I have felt self doubt in many aspects of my life. However, it is this self doubt that has allowed me to push through my fears and has allowed to keep my self improvement going. I am at a point now where I still am well aware I got so much more to learn, but I am confident in my work and what it stands for. I am confident that the Lord has bestowed upon me a beautiful talent.

Having said that, I ran across this manifesto that I just thought was one of the greatest illustrated and written. I instantly fell in love with it because it boldly states many truths. I strongly stand behind this to its full extent. I couldnt have said it any better. Joseph Sanchez Tupas is a fellow photographer whose works never seize to amaze me. He is nothing short of amazing. The photos below were taken by Joseph. The manifesto was written by another fellow photographer, Christa Meola, whose opinon I share in this. Amazing words Christa!!!!

{The Stunning Ms W}

Most of what makes people uncomfortable about others often has nothing to do with the person they are judging and ALL to do with their own...
