Minot, ND Photographer: Nelly Hernandez Photography 12 Days of Christmas Giveaway

Ever since I can remember, I remember my mother taking us to church every Sunday for mass, Saturday for Church school, Wednesday for bible study. My mother kept us busy. I won't lie, there were times I wanted to sleep in and just tell my mom, "Mom, I am a child of God, I am sure he won't mind if I miss one day" LOL. My mother taught us the true meaning of Christmas, the celebration of our savior Jesus Christ. We were a poor but oh so very happy family. We were a family of 10, (6 girls and 2 boys, and my parents) all living in a 2 bedroom house. I have such wonderful memories of those days. I thank my Mother today for the woman I am today. I thank her for showing me that Christmas Day wasn't about the gifts or the food (even though it was super delicious) but it was about Christ. I remember doing what we call a "POSADA". The posadas re-enact Mary and Joseph's cold and difficult journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of shelter. Children dress up as Mary, Joseph, shepards and angels. One main Angel leads the procession as we go from house to house in our neighborhood singing. So many fun posadas that every time I go home, we still do for the kids.

So today I ask, what wonderful Holiday childhood memories do you have ? I know we live in America where everyone is different and unique. For today's giveaway, I will be giving away a Free Sitting Fee for any type of session. You would only need to pay for your order. :) Remember, winners are chosen using random.org, but it is still nice to read through everyone's comments. :)

My ex-step dad is from Holland so we got to do a lot of traditions from there as kids. Wooden shoes, Sinterklaas, & lots of different candies from there.

I grew up a military brat, in fact the first memories of Christmas I have are when I live in Japan, my parents have always tried to keep traditions for my sisters and I since there were years that we were so far away from family or one of our family was away at war. One of the main ones was putting up the Christmas tree on Thanksgiving and leaving it up till New Years Day. We would even send my daddy a tree to put up while he was deployed, and it something we did for when my own husband started deploying.
We were very blessed to be stationed at Lackland AFB, TX from 2002 to 2010 with my parents. In fact at one point we live right down the street from each on base. So we got to do tons of things together during Christmas. From attending Light the Way at my sister's college. My sister attended the University of Incarnate Word, which is a catholic private college, and every year right after Thanksgiving they would hold a ceremony that represented the path that the wise men took to get to Bethlehem. The whole campus was covered in Christmas lights and section by section would turn on as you walked toward the chapel for mass. I loved taking my kids for it. It was a time that my whole family spent together and enjoyed. One of the other great ones, is when I was younger my parent heard about the movie the Christmas Story, we watched for the first time when I was about the same age as the little boy in the movie. Ever since then we have watched that movie every Christmas Morning to this day. That movie has helped us keep Christmas traditions in our family even if one of our family members is in far off lands fight a war. First my daddy and now my husband. We have all watched that movie "together" on Christmas morning every year. So those are just some of our Christmas traditions.

One day when i was like 5, a friend of mine told me Santa Claus was not real, that parents were the ones that bought the presents...so I decided to check every single space in the house, I even grabbed a chair and checked in the cabinets, the closets, under the couch; anyways: EVERYWHERE. At least that's what i thought lol.
I just loved how my mom tried for my brother, sister and me to believe Santa was real AND the Three Kings (not sure if it's the right translate)
I remember the feeling, the excitement of going to bed (at 8 pm) trying to fall asleep. Wake up around 12 no toys yet :(. Wake up around 3 am see the toys SMILE. Go back to bed fall asleep like an hour later. And finally wake up at 6:30-7 to hear my brother and sister tell the same story about waking up all the time wanting to open the gifts.
But hey we grew up also knowing that we were celebrating Jesus' birthday!

My favorite Christmas memories always have to do with traveling 5 hours to get to my grandmother's house every Christmas week. We always have Chritams dinner with all the Aunts and Uncles. The grown ups are always playing cards and the kids always play other games. We just spend the whole time visiting and laughing and spending time with each other.

My favorite Christmas memory was last Christmas when I came to Minot to visit my boyfriend. The day I got there he proposed, and the next day we eloped at the courthouse! It was snowy and magical, and the most romantic Christmas ever!

A childhood memory.... very vague although if I think back I remember my parents making me go to sleep because santa was coming to bring me my gifts.. they would wake me up as santa was leaving the house and I never got to see him bring the gifts.... however all my childhood memories are memories of my mother being with us. She past away as I was only 14 years old and that was a very harsh experience. Christmas is a great time to spend with my children and teach them the significance of christmas and family being together and happy....
